Game Overview

Iron Cross was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a release that bundled several older titles for convenience. It was developed by Impressions Games and published by Sierra On-Line, fitting right into that era of detailed, thoughtful strategy games that asked for patience rather than reflexes. You don't get flashy cutscenes or voice acting; it's all about the maps and the menus, a product of its time that doesn't try to be anything else.

You command individual platoons of infantry, armor, and artillery across a hex-based battlefield, carefully positioning them to exploit terrain and maintain supply lines. The main objective is to either capture all victory locations on the map or eliminate the opposing force, requiring constant assessment of unit strength and movement points. Two mechanics define the experience: managing zones of control to restrict enemy movement, and dealing with variable initiative which randomizes which side moves first each turn. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty is stern, punishing rash advances with devastating counterattacks. It feels like conducting a stubborn, messy operation where every small decision carries weight.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
