Game Overview

J.R.R. Tolkien’s War in Middle Earth is a strategic adventure game for MS-DOS that immerses players in the epic struggle for the One Ring, blending high-level army command with character-driven storytelling. Set during the events of The Lord of the Rings, the game begins with Frodo, Sam, and Pippin fleeing the Nazgûl near the Shire, but players have the freedom to shape their journey—whether following the books’ narrative or forging their own path. Victory hinges on delivering the Ring to Mount Doom, but defeat looms if Sauron reclaims it or captures key strongholds.

The game unfolds across three map layers: a strategic overview of Middle-earth, a detailed campaign map for issuing orders and managing armies, and an animated encounter level for character interactions and combat. Players command heroes and armies, make tactical decisions in battles, and equip items to unlock new units. Notably, permadeath adds weight to every choice—if Frodo falls, another hero must take up the Ring. With its mix of grand strategy and personal stakes, War in Middle Earth offers a unique, open-ended adaptation of Tolkien’s legendarium.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
