Play J.R.R. Tolkien’s War in Middle Earth Online

You guide the Fellowship’s fate—divert from Tolkien’s script, lose key characters forever, and sweat over every troop movement as Sauron’s forces close in. Those clunky 90s battle animations still hit when your careless orders get Merry speared by an orc.

Game Overview

War in Middle Earth came out in 1989 for MS-DOS, developed by Melbourne House. It was one of those ambitious strategy titles from the era that tried to capture the scale of Tolkien's world without the graphical polish we expect today. You manage the entire war for Middle Earth, making it a thoughtful, sometimes punishing experience that stands apart from more action-oriented games of the time.

You control the Free Peoples' armies and heroes across a strategic map, moving units region by region to resist Sauron's advancing forces. The main goal is to destroy the One Ring while preventing key locations like Minas Tirith from falling. Signature mechanics include directing heroes like Aragorn or Gandalf to lead troops in real-time battles, and making critical story choices that can permanently alter the narrative if characters die. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is steep, demanding careful planning with every decision. It feels like a tense, high-stakes chess match where one wrong move can unravel everything you've built.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
