Jump Bug came out in 1981 for arcades, developed and published by Rock-Ola. It was part of that early wave of games where developers were still figuring out what a platformer could be, experimenting with perspective and movement in ways that felt fresh, if a little strange.
You control a bouncing car, hopping across floating platforms that scroll vertically and horizontally. The goal is simple: reach the end of each stage while shooting enemies and collecting money bags for points. The signature mechanics are the constant bouncing, which gives the car a floaty, unpredictable momentum, and the multi-directional scrolling that constantly shifts the playing field. The pacing is frantic; you are always in motion, making split-second decisions about where to land and what to shoot. It feels like trying to solve a puzzle while the pieces are actively trying to knock you off the board.
