Play Karakuri Kengouden Musashi Road (Japan) Online
Swing Musashi’s sword through trap-filled temples, where dodging spinning blades and spike walls is just as deadly as the enemies. The controls are tight, but you’ll die a lot before the karakuri patterns click.

Karakuri Kengouden Musashi Road came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Irem. It was part of that early wave of action platformers on the system, where developers were still figuring out how to build complex levels on a small, monochrome screen. The game doesn't try to overwhelm you with spectacle; it's more about methodical movement and careful timing.
You control the young swordsman Musashi, navigating side-scrolling stages filled with mechanical traps and enemy samurai. Your main goal is to progress screen by screen, clearing each area of foes and avoiding deadly environmental hazards like falling blocks and rotating blades. Combat is straightforward, relying on your sword and occasional projectile weapons, but the real challenge comes from the level design itself. The pacing is deliberate, almost puzzle-like, as you learn the timing of each trap sequence. It feels satisfying to finally master a tricky section after several attempts, though the difficulty can be punishing for newcomers.
