Game Overview

Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Software Creations. It was one of the better baseball games on the system, a time when sports titles were really starting to figure out how to translate the feel of the game onto a cartridge. It had the MLBPA license, so you got real players, just without the official team names, which was the standard workaround back then.

You control a full team of players, pitching, batting, and fielding your way through a full nine innings. The main goal is to outscore your opponent, either in a single exhibition game or by playing through a full season. Its signature mechanics include a unique timing-based swing system where you press the button as the pitch crosses the plate, and a fielding system that lets you dive or jump to make spectacular catches in the outfield. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty feels fair, with a good sense of progression as you learn to read pitches. It feels responsive and satisfying when you connect with a fastball and send it over the fence.
