Knightmare, released by Konami in 1986 for MS-DOS, was one of those games that felt right at home on a beige desktop computer. It didn't try to push the hardware to its limits, but it offered a solid, focused experience that stood out among the text adventures and simpler arcade ports of the time.
You control a knight who flies upward through a vertically scrolling dungeon, using a bow to shoot down waves of bats, floating heads, and other creatures that pour in from all sides. The main goal is simply to survive as long as possible, clearing each screen of enemies before moving higher. The signature mechanics include screen-by-screen progression, where you must eliminate all foes to advance, and the constant pressure of enemy swarms that require quick reflexes and careful aim. The pacing is relentless; there's little time to rest as new threats appear almost immediately. It feels like a tense, non-stop battle against an endless tide of monsters.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
