Play Kouryuu Densetsu Villgust Gaiden (Japan) [En by J2e v1.0] (~Armed Dragon Fantasy Villgust) Online
You swing swords and fling spells in brisk, chaotic battles, stumbling into weird little side stories between dungeons—that fan translation finally lets you in on the oddball charm.

Game Overview
Ever heard of Kouryuu Densetsu Villgust Gaiden? It’s one of those weird little NES RPGs that somehow slipped under the radar outside Japan—until the fan translation came along. At first glance, it feels like a mashup of Dragon Quest and early Final Fantasy, but with this oddball energy all its own. You’ve got your swords, your spells, your obligatory dragon lore, but the battles are faster, almost action-RPG-ish at times.
The sprites are chunky and colorful in that classic 8-bit way, and the music’s got that tinny charm you either love or tolerate. What really hooked me was how unpredictable it gets—one minute you’re fighting goblins in a forest, the next you’re stumbling into some bizarre side quest involving a talking… statue? Maybe? The translation’s a bit rough in spots (thanks, J2e), but it’s way better than squinting at kanji.
If you’ve got a soft spot for forgotten NES oddities, this one’s a trip. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—old-school means old-school.
