Game Overview

I picked up Kunio-kun no Chou Nekketsu! - Daiundoukai on the Nintendo DS back in 2009, a time when the handheld was full of quirky Japanese titles that never made it west. Arc System Works handled this one, a follow-up to the classic Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun sports spinoffs, and it kept that same rough-and-tumble spirit alive on the dual screens.

You control Kunio and his friends through a series of absurd athletic events, from relay races to dodgeball and tug-of-war. The main goal is simply to win each competition, but the real fun comes from how you do it; you can punch, kick, and throw opponents (or even your own teammates) to sabotage their progress or clear your path. The game uses both screens for action, with events often scrolling vertically or splitting the view between teams. It’s fast, unpredictable, and pretty difficult, with opponents who fight dirty and events that demand quick reflexes. Playing it feels like being in a schoolyard brawl that just happens to have a shot put and a finish line.
