Last Action Hero on the Genesis is basically what happens when you take a ridiculous '90s action movie and cram it into a side-scrolling beat-em-up. You play as Jack Slater—Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character from the film—punching, shooting, and occasionally jumping over speeding cars while bad guys explode in the background. It’s not subtle, but that’s the point.

The first level throws you right into it: you’re dodging dynamite in some back alley, mashing buttons to combo-throw henchmen into conveniently placed explosive barrels. The controls are simple, the action’s fast, and the one-liners are gloriously bad. It feels like playing through a B-movie, complete with pixelated slow-motion jumps and enemies who somehow think attacking a guy who just kicked a motorcycle into their friend is a good idea.

Is it a masterpiece? Nah. But if you’ve ever wanted to live out that over-the-top action flick fantasy—where every punch sounds like a shotgun blast and the health pickups are literal movie reels—this game nails the vibe. Just don’t expect deep strategy beyond "hit things until they stop moving."
