I first played Last Half of Darkness back in the day, a 1989 MS-DOS release from SoftLab Laboratories. It was one of those early horror adventure games that relied on atmosphere over flash, typical of the era when you had to use your imagination to fill in the gaps left by limited graphics and sound. You explore a haunted mansion, screen by screen, with each new area hiding some new piece of the mystery or a fresh obstacle to overcome.

You control an unnamed protagonist, moving through static scenes, collecting items, solving environmental puzzles, and avoiding or confronting supernatural threats. The main goal is to uncover the secrets of the mansion and break the curse that holds it. Key mechanics include careful inventory management, deciphering clues from notes you find, and dealing with a limited field of view that keeps you constantly on edge. The pacing is slow, deliberate; you can't rush, and mistakes are costly. Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
