Okay, so Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon on DS is basically what happens when you take a tiny purple dragon, chain him to his edgy rival-turned-ally Cynder, and throw them into a surprisingly pretty (for a DS game) open world. The whole "tethered together" thing sounds annoying at first, but it actually makes the combat and flying sections way more interesting—you’ve gotta coordinate attacks or you’ll just yank each other around like two cats tied to the same leash.

The levels are these sprawling, semi-open areas with little nooks to explore if you’re into that, and the puzzles are just tricky enough to make you pause without derailing the action. Combat’s simple but satisfying—fire breath never gets old, and Cynder’s shadow moves feel appropriately sinister. Just don’t expect the co-op to work miracles; the AI partner’s fine, but playing with an actual human is where the chaos (and fun) really kicks in.

It’s not perfect—the camera fights you sometimes, and the story’s about as deep as you’d expect from a dragon-themed beat-em-up—but for a handheld adventure, it punches above its weight. If you ever wanted to feel like a tiny, angry flamethrower with wings, this’ll do the trick.
