Tiny Simba hops on giraffes until the game smacks you with its trademark cruelty—hyenas lurk, stampedes crush, and every jump has to be pixel-perfect. The chiptune soundtrack slaps while it ruins your childhood.

I first played The Lion King on my Game Boy back in the mid-90s, a portable version of the Virgin Interactive title that came out in 1994. It was one of those licensed games that felt pretty common for the platform, a side-scrolling adventure that tried to capture the movie's story in small, manageable chunks. The hardware limitations were obvious, but it did a decent job translating the look and feel of the film into something playable on the go.
You control Simba through various stages of his life, from a cub to the adult lion king. The main goal is to progress through levels based on locations from the film, like the Pride Lands and the elephant graveyard. Gameplay involves a lot of platform jumping, combat with a pounce or roll attack, and occasional environmental puzzles, like using logs to cross gaps or climbing vines. Some stages have you riding ostriches or avoiding stampedes, which keeps things varied. The difficulty can be unforgiving, with precise jumps required and enemies that respawn quickly. It feels challenging and sometimes frustrating, but finishing a tough section gives a real sense of accomplishment.
