Game Overview

Oh man, The Lion King on SNES—what a gorgeous, brutal little game. You start off as tiny Simba, batting at bugs and learning how to pounce, and it all feels so innocent... until you hit that stampede level. Suddenly you're dodging wildebeests like your life depends on it (because it does).

The animation holds up shockingly well—Simba's fur sways when he runs, and the backgrounds look ripped straight from the movie. But don't get too distracted by the scenery. That "Can't Wait to Be King" level with the monkeys? Pure platforming torture. You'll throw your controller at least once.

By the time you're adult Simba facing off against Scar, your thumbs will be sore, but the payoff feels earned. The music helps—those African choir chants and Elton John melodies hit just right. Just maybe keep a walkthrough handy for the waterfall jump in the second level. You'll know the one.
