Game Overview

I remember picking up The Lion King for the NES back in 1994. It was published by Virgin Interactive, and like a lot of Disney licensed games from that era, it tried to capture the movie's story on the console. The NES was already on its way out by then, with the Super Nintendo taking over, but this was one of those late releases that still got plenty of attention from players who hadn't upgraded yet.

You control Simba through his growth from a young cub to the adult lion king. The goal is to survive each level, defeat enemies like hyenas and scarab beetles, and eventually face Scar. The game uses screen by screen platforming with elements like climbing vines, avoiding pitfalls, and leaping across gaps. Signature mechanics include a roar attack that stuns enemies when you're adult Simba, and specific stages where you ride ostriches or scramble up a waterfall avoiding obstacles. It's known for being quite difficult, with some brutal jumps and enemy placements that demand precise timing. Playing it feels like a constant test of patience and skill, where every screen cleared brings a real sense of accomplishment.
