Game Overview

I picked up Madagascar for the Game Boy Advance back in 2005, developed by Vicarious Visions. It was one of those licensed platformers that felt pretty common at the time, but it stood out because it followed the movie's plot loosely while doing its own thing. The GBA was full of these kinds of adaptations, and this one had a certain charm, even if it wasn't pushing any technical boundaries.

You control Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman, switching between them to use their unique abilities; Alex roars to stun enemies, Marty kicks, Gloria charges through barriers, and Melman uses his long neck to reach high platforms. The goal is to escape the zoo and eventually get back to New York, which involves navigating side scrolling levels, solving simple puzzles, and collecting fruit to progress. The penguin sections break up the pace with vehicle based chaos, like driving a stolen truck through the streets. The difficulty is manageable, never too punishing, but some sections require careful timing. It feels straightforward and lighthearted, like a breezy afternoon playthrough.
