I picked up Madagascar for the Nintendo DS back in 2005, a game published by Activision that fit right in with the era's licensed platformers. It was one of those titles you'd grab if you enjoyed the movie and wanted a portable dose of its characters and settings, nothing groundbreaking but solid for what it was.

You control Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe across various stages, switching between them to use their unique abilities. The main goal is to escape the Central Park Zoo and eventually make it back to the wild, which involves a lot of running, jumping, and interacting with objects. Signature mechanics include character-specific actions, like Alex's roar to scare enemies or Marty's high jump, and touch screen mini-games for puzzles or quick events. The pacing is brisk, with some levels throwing in chase sequences or light combat, though the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in certain platforming sections. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes chaotic romp through the film's key moments.
