Game Overview

I picked up Madagascar for the Nintendo DS back in 2005, a game published by Activision that came out around the same time as the movie. It was one of those early DS titles that tried to make use of the touch screen and dual screens in simple, sometimes awkward ways, fitting right in with the experimental feel of the platform's first couple years. You don't see many people talk about it now, but at the time it was just another licensed game trying to capture the movie's energy.

You control Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe across different stages, switching between them to use their unique abilities. The main goal is to escape from the zoo, survive the wild, and eventually get back to New York, following the film's plot. Signature mechanics include character-specific moves, like Gloria's butt-bounce to break objects, and touch-based mini-games for actions like hacking through vines or balancing on logs. The pacing is fairly straightforward, with light platforming and simple puzzles, though some sections can feel repetitive. It's a short, uncomplicated game that feels exactly like what it is: a quick, forgettable tie-in.
