Madden NFL 08 on the Nintendo DS came out in 2007, developed by EA Tiburon. It was one of the more ambitious sports titles on the handheld, trying to fit a full football experience onto that small dual screen. This was during the DS era where touch controls were still being explored in all sorts of games, not just casual ones.

You control the entire team, calling plays from a simplified playbook and then executing them on the field. The main objective is to win football games by outscoring your opponent. A couple of its signature mechanics involve the touch screen; you flick the stylus to kick field goals or throw passes with specific trajectories. You also use the bottom screen to quickly audible at the line, changing the play based on the defensive look you're getting. The pacing is generally quick, with shorter quarters to keep things moving on the handheld, and the difficulty can spike depending on the AI setting. It feels surprisingly complete for a pocket-sized football game.
