Game Overview

Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle—or just "Day of the Tentacle" if you're not into floppy disk nostalgia—is one of those LucasArts point-and-click adventures that somehow stays hilarious no matter how many times you replay it. You control three weirdos (Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne) trying to stop a sentient purple tentacle from world domination, which already tells you everything about the tone. The puzzles are ridiculous in the best way—like using a hamster to power a time machine or convincing Benjamin Franklin to skip kite experiments because you stole his battery. And yeah, time travel means you’re hopping between colonial America, the present (well, 1993), and a dystopian future where tentacles run everything.

What really sells it is the writing. Every interaction, from arguing with a deranged dentist to negotiating with a mummy, is packed with dumb, clever jokes. The art style holds up too—big, cartoony, and full of little background gags. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand. Some solutions are downright nonsensical (in a good way), and you’ll probably get stuck at least once trying to figure out how a fake mustache solves anything. Still, it’s one of those games where getting stuck is half the fun because the dialogue is so stupidly charming.

Also, yes, the CD version has voice acting, but the floppy edition’s silent text somehow fits the absurdity better. Either way, it’s a classic for a reason.
