Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2003, developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo. It was part of that great run of handheld RPGs that felt big and detailed, even on a small screen. You weren't just getting another platformer; it was a full adventure built for the system.
You control both Mario and Luigi at the same time, using the A and B buttons for their respective jumps and hammers to interact with the world and fight enemies. The main goal is to recover Princess Peach's stolen voice from the witch Cackletta, which sends the brothers to the strange Beanbean Kingdom. The combat uses timed button presses to boost your attacks or dodge incoming ones, and the overworld is filled with puzzles that require you to use the brothers' different abilities together. It moves at a good clip for an RPG, with some tricky boss fights that test your timing. Playing it feels like you're actively participating in a cartoon.
