Mario Kart DS came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005, developed by Nintendo EAD. It was one of the first games I really got into on that system, back when the dual screens and stylus still felt new. This version brought the series into a portable format without losing what made it fun.
You control Mario or other characters from the franchise, racing against seven opponents on colorful tracks. The main goal is simple: finish first. You use items like red shells to target racers ahead or bananas to create hazards behind you. The touch screen shows your position and items, while the top screen displays the race. The pacing is fast, with races rarely lasting more than a few minutes, but the AI can be surprisingly aggressive on higher difficulties. Drifting around corners to get a speed boost becomes second nature after a while. It feels responsive and chaotic in the best way.
