Game Overview

Marvel Super Hero Squad came out on the Nintendo DS in 2009, published by THQ. It was part of that wave of kid-friendly comic book games that felt right at home on the handheld, a simpler alternative to the bigger console releases at the time.

You control a team of three heroes, switching between them to use their specific powers against enemies or to solve environmental puzzles. The main goal is to fight through levels, screen by screen, clearing out villains and occasionally hunting for collectible Fractals to progress. Combat is straightforward button mashing, but each character has a unique special move that adds a bit of strategy; Iron Man repulsor blasts feel different from Wolverine's slashing combos. The pacing is brisk, the difficulty is gentle, and it never overstays its welcome. It feels like a Saturday morning cartoon you can play in short, satisfying bursts.
