Medarot 3 - Parts Collection is that weird little GBC game I stumbled into years ago and still think about sometimes. You’re basically a kid collecting robot parts like trading cards, then slapping them together to make your own custom battle bot. The combinations get ridiculous—I once built a tank-legged sniper with a flamethrower arm just to see if it’d work (it did, poorly).

Battles play out like a stripped-down tactical RPG where positioning matters way more than you’d expect. Your little robot dude can only move so far each turn, and some weapons straight-up won’t fire if you’re too close. The dialogue between fights is this bizarre mix of Saturday morning cartoon and robot existentialism—half the time I had no idea what my Medabot was complaining about, but it was charming anyway.

Fair warning: if you’re the type who loses sleep min-maxing gear in RPGs, this game will ruin you. There’s always one more rare head part or hidden weapon to hunt down. The pixel art still holds up, especially when your cobbled-together monstrosity somehow wins a match it had no business surviving.

It’s a shame this never left Japan—emulation’s your best bet unless you’ve got deep pockets for cartridges.
