I picked up Bomberman Collection on the Game Boy, a compilation that brought together a few of the earlier titles. It was published by Hudson Soft, one of those releases that felt right at home on the handheld during the platform's crowded, puzzle and action heavy years. You didn't get a huge graphical overhaul from the NES versions, but having these maze games in your pocket was the main appeal.

You control the round, helmeted Bomberman, navigating single screen arenas blocked by destructible soft blocks and indestructible hard ones. Your main objective is to eliminate all the enemies on each stage by strategically planting bombs that explode in a cross-shaped pattern. Key mechanics include collecting power-ups that increase your blast radius, the number of bombs you can place at once, and your movement speed; you also find items that let you kick bombs across the screen or detonate them remotely. The pacing is methodical, sometimes frantic when you get cornered, and the difficulty has a steady, satisfying climb. It feels clever to outmaneuver foes and set chain reactions that clear a path to the exit.
