Game Overview

Mercenary: Escape From Targ & The Second City came out on the Amiga in 1992, developed by Novagen and published by Logotron. It was part of that wave of ambitious, open-ended games that really pushed what home computers could do at the time, offering a kind of freedom that felt rare back then.

You pilot a small spacecraft, starting out stranded on the planet Targ with little more than a basic ship and a need to survive. The goal is to earn enough credits through trading, completing missions, or even a bit of piracy to eventually buy your way offworld. You explore a wireframe 3D world, city by city and sector by sector, engaging in tense dogfights, negotiating with factions, and always watching your fuel and shields. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical; you spend a lot of time navigating and planning, which makes the sudden combat encounters all the more gripping. It feels like you're genuinely scraping by in a hostile, indifferent universe, where every decision carries weight and a mistake can leave you stranded all over again.
