Game Overview

Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 came out in 1989 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed and published by Microsoft. It was a defining title for PC flight simulation in its era, offering a level of realism that felt substantial on the hardware of the time. You loaded it from a stack of floppy disks and it ran in a crisp, if limited, color palette that made the world feel tangible.

You pilot a selection of aircraft, primarily a Cessna, managing everything from engine startup to landing gear and flaps. The main objective is simply to fly; to navigate between airports using VOR radio navigation, fight crosswinds on final approach, and try to set the plane down gently. Signature mechanics include reading the instrument panel for airspeed, altitude, and heading, while also looking out the window to spot runways and landmarks. The pacing is slow and deliberate, demanding patience as you trim the aircraft for level flight or execute a long, banking turn. It feels like a genuine test of concentration, where a perfect landing brings a quiet, earned satisfaction.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
