Game Overview

I picked up Mobile Trainer for the Game Boy Color back when it came out in Japan in 2000. It was published by Nintendo, and it felt like a strange little experiment even at the time, a piece of hardware and software that tried to turn the handheld into a personal fitness gadget. You had to attach this motion sensor accessory to your arm or leg, and the game would track your movements as you exercised.

You don't really control a character on screen; instead, you are the controller. The game presents a series of simple exercises, like punching, stepping, or running in place, and you have to match the rhythm and motion shown. The main objective is just to complete these routines, trying to keep your form and timing accurate. The sensor picks up your movements, and the game gives feedback with beeps and visual cues. It's not fast paced, and the difficulty comes more from maintaining consistency than from any complex challenge. Playing it feels like a slightly awkward, minimalist aerobics session with a very patient electronic coach.
