Monster Farm DS 2 is one of those weirdly addictive DS games where you raise monsters—not just any monsters, but ones you create by feeding them random stuff like CDs or rocks. Yeah, it’s as bizarre as it sounds. You toss an item into a magic cauldron, and poof, out comes some mutant creature with stats based on what you fed it. I wasted way too much time trying to breed the perfect monster using old game discs.

The battles are simple turn-based stuff, but the real fun is seeing how your weird little abominations evolve. Some turn into total beasts, others… well, let’s just say not every experiment goes well. There’s a tournament system too, so you can finally prove your three-headed chicken-dragon is superior to your friend’s lumpy golem thing. Just don’t get too attached—monsters age and eventually retire. It’s oddly emotional for a game about mutant pets.

If you ever played the old Monster Rancher games, this is basically that but with more ways to mess up your monster’s genetics. The whole thing’s in Japanese, but menus are easy enough to figure out after some trial and error. Or a lot of error.
