I picked up Montezuma's Return on the Game Boy Color back in 1998, a time when handheld games were really starting to get more complex. It was developed by Tarantula Studios, and it stood out for trying to bring a full isometric puzzle platformer to the small screen. The game didn't get a ton of attention, but it had a certain charm if you were into methodical, trap filled adventures.

You control an explorer navigating through ancient temples, screen by screen, with the goal of collecting keys and reaching the exit. The isometric perspective makes judging jumps tricky; you have to time movements carefully to avoid rolling boulders, spikes, and other hazards. Combat is simple, mostly involving a whip to fend off enemies like snakes and spiders. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with each room presenting a new environmental puzzle to solve. It feels tense and thoughtful, especially when you finally clear a difficult section after several attempts.
