Montezuma's Return! is one of those Game Boy Color games that makes you wonder how it slipped under the radar. You play as this little explorer dodging spikes, leaping over bottomless pits, and getting flattened by boulders—all while hunting treasure in these maze-like Aztec ruins. The isometric view makes every jump feel a little more tense than your usual platformer, like you’re constantly judging angles while running for your life.
It’s got that classic Pitfall! energy but with way more traps and a weirdly satisfying puzzle layer. One minute you’re timing a jump over a rolling skull, the next you’re figuring out how to trigger a hidden door. The colors pop for a GBC game, and the music nails that adventurous, slightly frantic vibe. Just don’t get too attached to your first few lives—those spike pits come out of nowhere.
