I picked up NASCAR Challenge for the Game Boy Color back in 1998, a racing game published by Electro Brain. It was one of those portable titles that tried to capture the feel of stock car racing on a system better known for platformers and puzzle games. The graphics were simple, the sound was basic, but it had a certain charm if you were into motorsports.
You control a single NASCAR-style stock car, racing against computer opponents on oval tracks. The main objective is straightforward: finish first. You manage tire wear and fuel levels, which drop steadily during each race, forcing you to plan pit stops carefully. The handling is weighty and requires patience; you learn to brake early and ease into turns to avoid spinning out. Races are short but intense, and the AI provides a decent challenge without feeling unfair. It feels like a condensed, slightly clunky but earnest attempt to bring a piece of NASCAR to your pocket.
