New SD Gundam came out for the original Game Boy in 1990, developed by TOSE and published by Bandai. It was part of that early wave of portable games where developers tried to fit big ideas onto a small, monochrome screen. You get a squad of super deformed Gundam units, and the goal is to clear each stage by defeating all enemy mobile suits.

You control your team on a grid based map, moving one unit at a time into position for attacks. The combat is straightforward; you just line up adjacent to a foe and choose to attack with a beam saber or a ranged weapon. Each mission is quick, but the enemy AI will punish careless moves, so you have to think a turn or two ahead. It feels sharp and focused, like a compact game of chess with laser swords.
