Game Overview

I first played Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 back in 1999. It was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, and it felt like a strange, wonderful experiment at the time. It wasn't trying to be a polished fighting game like others on the system; it was just a bunch of Nintendo characters thrown together to see what would happen.

You control characters like Mario, Link, or Pikachu, and the goal is to knock your opponents off the stage. Instead of a health bar, you deal damage that makes them fly farther when hit. The main mechanics involve using standard and special attacks to build up that damage, then landing a strong smash attack to send them flying. The pacing is fast and a little unpredictable, especially with items popping up everywhere. It feels chaotic and silly, but landing that final hit is always deeply satisfying.
