Nitemare 3D came out in 1994 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Merit Software. It was one of those early first-person shooters that felt experimental, a step beyond Wolfenstein but still very much a product of its time, running on systems that handled blocky graphics and simple sound.
You control a student exploring a haunted mansion, fighting monsters with an odd mix of weapons like a slingshot, a wand, and a sword. Your goal is to find pieces of a medallion to break the curse before your friend Hugo decays completely. The game moves screen by screen, with each room presenting new enemies or puzzles; some creatures resist certain attacks, forcing you to switch tactics on the fly. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can spike without warning, especially when ammo runs low. It feels tense and slightly surreal, like stumbling through a bad dream where every corner hides something new to fear.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
