Game Overview

Planet Monsters on the GBA is one of those games I stumbled onto years ago and still think about sometimes. At first glance, it looks like another monster-collecting thing, but then you realize you're moving your little creatures around on a grid, trying to outmaneuver the other guy—it's chess if the pieces were these weird, charming blobs with attitude.

The Mode7 effects actually hold up surprisingly well, giving the battles this pseudo-3D tilt that makes positioning matter way more than you'd expect. My first hour was mostly going "Wait, why did that attack miss? Ohhh, elevation." The monsters all have these goofy idle animations too—one of mine kept falling asleep mid-battle.

It's got that perfect portable game rhythm where you can knock out a battle or two in a few minutes, but then suddenly it's been forty-five and you're still tweaking your team. Definitely one of the GBA's weirder tactical gems.
