Pocky & Rocky came out on the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Natsume. It was part of that wave of action games that felt distinctly Japanese, with bright colors and characters pulled from folklore, standing out even among other SNES titles.
You control either Pocky, a shrine maiden who throws ofuda cards, or Rocky, a raccoon tanuki who attacks with leaves. The goal is to fight through screen after screen of yokai and enemy soldiers, clearing each area before moving on. Your main actions are shooting and a close-range spin attack to deflect enemy shots; you also collect power-ups to strengthen your projectiles and find helper characters that fight alongside you. The pace is relentless, with enemies swarming and filling the screen with patterns you need to memorize. It feels like a constant, tense dance of dodging and firing back.
