Game Overview

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky (the English name for this one) is basically the best version of the DS dungeon crawlers—it takes the original Explorers games and piles on extra story bits, new playable Pokémon, and some quality-of-life tweaks. You start off as a human-turned-Pokémon (I got stuck as a Riolu my first time, which was weird but fun) and team up with a partner to explore randomly generated dungeons. The twist? You’re running a rescue guild, taking jobs to save other Pokémon or retrieve lost items, and the story gets surprisingly deep for a spinoff.

The gameplay’s simple at first—move turn-by-turn, manage your tiny inventory, hope you packed enough apples—but the farther you go, the more you’ll need to think about type matchups and team combos. And yeah, the hunger mechanic’s still annoying, but at least this version lets you store items between runs. The pixel art’s charming, the music’s nostalgic, and the post-game content is ridiculous (in a good way). If you’ve ever wanted a Pokémon roguelike with way more plot than it needs, this is the one.
