If you played the first Hero’s Quest, you’ll feel right at home in Trial by Fire—except now you’re sweating under a desert sun instead of wandering through European forests. Shapeir’s got this weird mix of bustling markets and eerie elemental disturbances, and of course, it’s up to you to figure out why everything’s going wrong. The locals are a chatty bunch, and half the fun is just poking around town to see who’s got a problem for you to solve (or a hidden stash to steal, if you went the thief route).

The combat’s a step up from the first game—instead of just swinging wildly, you’ve got high, mid, and low attacks, plus dodges and parries. It’s still real-time, so you’ll mash keys like crazy when a scorpion or bandit jumps you. And yeah, your skills improve the more you use them, so if you keep failing at lockpicking, maybe stop trying to rob every door in town for five minutes.

What I love is how your class actually matters. Fighters smash things, thieves sneak, and wizards… well, good luck not blowing yourself up with spells at first. And if you play your cards right (and avoid being a total jerk), you might even earn that shiny paladin title. Just don’t expect the game to hold your hand—dying to thirst in the desert because you forgot a waterskin is basically a rite of passage.
