Red Lightning came out in 1989 from Strategic Simulations, Inc. as part of their MS-DOS Classic Games line. It was a time when strategy games were often dense and unforgiving, and this one fit right in with its sci-fi setting and methodical pace.
You command a lone hovercar pilot, navigating a deadly, futuristic race circuit. Your main goal is to survive each track and outmaneuver aggressive AI opponents who will shove you into walls without hesitation. The core mechanics involve managing your energy shield and weapon systems, carefully choosing when to attack or defend, and memorizing the sharp, punishing turns of each course. The game is brutally difficult, demanding perfect timing and route knowledge. It feels like a tense, high-stakes duel where every decision carries immediate consequences.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
