Game Overview

Rent a Hero is this weird little Sega Genesis gem that mashes up RPG stuff with 2D fighting—like if Streets of Rage had a weird cousin who really liked turn-based menus. You play as this guy who basically becomes a superhero-for-hire, taking odd jobs that inevitably turn into punch-ups with random thugs and mutants. The fighting feels clunky at first (this was 1991, after all), but there's something charming about how it just throws you into this bizarre world where you're equally likely to be delivering groceries or roundhouse-kicking a guy in a chicken suit.

Fun fact: it got a Dreamcast/Xbox remake years later that smoothed out some of the jank, but honestly? The original's weirdness is part of the appeal. You'll spend half your time confused and the other half laughing at how absurd some of the scenarios get.
