Versus Hero came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by a small team whose name escapes me now. It was one of those early portable fighting games, a genre that was still finding its feet on the small screen. You wouldn't mistake it for an arcade cabinet, but it had its own quiet charm.

You pick a fighter from a small roster and face off against either the computer or a friend with a link cable. The goal is simple: reduce your opponent's health bar before they do the same to you. The controls are stripped down to an attack button and a jump button, but timing is everything. You learn to anticipate moves, block high and low, and land special moves by tapping out simple directional inputs. Matches are quick and surprisingly tactical for such a simple setup. It feels sharp and responsive, a game of pure reaction and prediction.
