Rise of the Robots came out on the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Mirage Studios. It was one of those fighting games that tried to stand out with pre-rendered graphics, which looked pretty slick in magazines at the time. The game arrived during a period when the Genesis was still competing hard, and every new fighter wanted a piece of the arcade action at home.

You control one of several cyborg fighters, each with a small set of special moves executed with complex button combinations. The main goal is to defeat your opponent in one-on-one combat across a series of matches. Signature mechanics include a six-button control layout that promises depth but often devolves into button mashing, and elaborate, cinematic super moves that play out in slow motion. The pacing is stiff, and the AI can feel brutally unfair even on lower difficulties. Playing it feels like wrestling with a concept that never quite came together as a satisfying game.
