Rise of the Robots on the Amiga was one of those games that looked absolutely mind-blowing in screenshots—smooth 3D-ish fighters duking it out with flashy animations. But once you actually played it, you realized pretty quick that the gameplay didn’t quite live up to the hype. The controls were stiff, the AI was either way too easy or unfairly brutal, and matches often felt like you were wrestling with the joystick more than the opponent.

Still, there was something weirdly charming about it. The robot designs were cool, and landing a heavy punch felt satisfying when it actually connected. Mostly, though, it was the kind of game you’d pop in to show off the graphics to friends before moving on to something with better mechanics.
