Game Overview

River City Ransom on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1993, developed by Technōs Japan. It was a time when side-scrolling beat 'em ups were common, but this one stood apart with its open structure and RPG elements. You weren't just moving left to right; you had a whole city to explore, with shops, schools, and hidden areas to find.

You control Alex or Ryan, high school students trying to rescue a kidnapped girlfriend from a gang. You fight through screen after screen of enemies, using punches, kicks, and weapons like chains or rocks. Defeated foes drop money, which you use to buy food for health or books that teach new fighting techniques. The pacing is deliberate; you often backtrack to heal or save up for better skills. It feels like building your own fighter from the ground up, one fistfight and one meat bun at a time.
