Game Overview

Roger Clemens's MVP Baseball came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed by Sculptured Software. It was one of the earlier baseball games on the system, arriving before the console's library really exploded with more complex sports titles. You got to play with a full roster of major leaguers, though they all had these thinly disguised fake names that were pretty easy to figure out.

You control the pitcher or batter depending on whether your team is on defense or offense. The main goal is to win games by outscoring the computer or a second player. On the mound, you choose from a few pitch types and aim with a cursor; hitting involves timing your swing as the ball crosses the plate. The fielding view switches abruptly to a behind-the-fielder perspective whenever the ball is put in play, which takes some getting used to. The game moves at a decent pace, though the difficulty can spike, especially when trying to hit off-speed pitches. It feels straightforward and a little rough, but there's a simple joy in connecting with a well-timed hit and watching it sail.
