Game Overview

Shinobi on NES is one of those games that makes you feel like a total badass ninja—until you get wrecked by some random dude with a sword. You play as Joe Musashi (yes, that's his actual name), sprinting through side-scrolling levels to rescue hostages. At first, you'll spam shurikens like crazy, but then you realize kicks and punches actually work better up close. And when things get messy, there's this satisfying ninja magic that just wipes out everyone on screen.

The levels are split into bite-sized chunks, which is nice because you'll die a lot. Hostages are usually guarded by these huge guys who chuck swords at you, and don't even get me started on the gun-wielding goons. The real fun starts at the end of each level when you face off against ridiculous bosses—like a skyscraper-sized dude or a helicopter that really shouldn't be there.
