Silent Service II is one of those old-school submarine sims that somehow makes staring at a pixelated periscope for hours weirdly gripping. Yeah, the graphics are ancient—like, "wow, 256 colors!" ancient—but don’t let that fool you. The gameplay’s got way more depth than you’d expect.

You start by picking a home port somewhere in the Pacific, then plot your patrol route. Most of the time, you’re just watching your sub crawl across the map in fast-forward until something pops up—maybe a lone freighter, maybe an entire convoy. The real tension comes when you’re lining up a shot, trying to stay undetected while those little pixelated ships inch closer. And if they spot you? Good luck. Battleships and carriers bolt at ridiculous speeds, and suddenly you’re sweating over sonar pings and depth charges.

The career mode’s where it shines, though. One patrol might go smooth; the next, you’re limping back to port with half your fuel gone and no kills to show for it. It’s unforgiving, but that’s what makes sinking something big feel like an actual victory. Just don’t expect fancy cutscenes—your reward is mostly watching a tiny explosion sprite and some text telling you how many tons you just sent to the bottom.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
