Sonic Chronicles: Yami Jigen Kara No Shinryakusha came out on the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by BioWare. It was a strange and ambitious project for its time, a turn-based RPG starring Sega's mascot on a handheld better known for touch screen minigames and stylus-heavy adventures. The game felt like an experiment, a departure from the high-speed platforming the series was built on.
You control a party of Sonic characters, exploring maps screen by screen, talking to NPCs, and engaging in turn-based battles. The main goal is to stop Dr. Eggman, who has returned with a new army from another dimension. Signature mechanics include timed touch screen inputs during attacks to boost their power and a POW move system that lets you chain special abilities between party members. The pacing is deliberate, with exploration broken up by frequent, sometimes repetitive combat encounters. It feels like a curious, slightly clunky attempt to fit a console-style RPG onto the DS.
