Game Overview

Okay, so Sonic – Hyper X is basically what happens when someone takes classic Genesis Sonic and feeds it pure adrenaline. The first time I booted it up, I thought, "Yeah, I know how this goes"—until I hit the first loop and realized my little blue dude was moving way faster than I remembered. The levels look like classic Sonic zones at first glance, but then you notice the new ramps, hidden shortcuts, and these weird floating platforms that fling you across the screen if you time your jump wrong (which I did, a lot).

The power-ups are a nice touch—there’s this turbo boost that makes you briefly invincible while shredding through enemies, and the pixel art somehow makes everything feel even more chaotic in the best way. It’s got that perfect SEGA Genesis crunch in the sound effects too, like the spin dash sounds like it’s about to tear a hole in your speakers. Just don’t blame me when you wipe out on the third zone because you underestimated how fast that corkscrew section actually is.

If you’ve ever wanted to play Sonic but with the dial cranked to 11, this fan-made gem nails it without losing that classic feel. My thumbs still hurt.
