I picked up Sonic Wings Special for the Sega Saturn back in 1996, a port of the arcade shooter by Video System. It was a time when the Saturn was full of 2D games fighting for attention against the rise of 3D, and this one stood out for its sheer personality and chaotic energy. It felt like a natural fit for the system's library, a straightforward arcade experience you could enjoy at home.

You choose from a large roster of eccentric pilots, each with their own unique aircraft and special weapons, and then blast through waves of enemy planes, tanks, and absurdly large bosses. The main goal is simply to survive each stage, destroy everything in your path, and reach one of the game's many branching endings. Key mechanics include collecting power-up icons to enhance your main shot and bombs, managing a partner plane that follows and assists you, and navigating dense, patterned enemy fire that demands constant movement. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can spike sharply depending on the route you take, but successfully weaving through a screen full of colorful bullets is incredibly satisfying.
